Many people don't realize that the decpetively called "Protect America Act" was passed in August, 2007, and greatly expanded FISA. It allows the Attorney General and the Director of National Intelligence to authorize warrantless surveillance WITHOUT authorization from even a FISA Judge. The "Protect America Act" sunsets in five months and we need to communiate with Congress that the statute should be allowed to sunset without interference.
Since the attacks on September 11, 2001, the government has unjustly targeted United States ' Arabs, Muslims and South Asians. In August, a new law expanded the government's ability to spy on innocent Americans and a recent government report showed that the FBI abused the laws it uses to collect personal records. Our most basic constitutional rights are threatened, as "habeas corpus" - the right to challenge in court your being detained by law enforcement - is at stake.
Are you concerned? Then this meeting is for you. Come learn how Trenton can be one of more than 400 towns across the country to formally oppose these illegal invasions of our due process and privacy rights.
