New Jersey Students for Peace

Students want Princeton High School
to address current world events in the classroom

Group will present request to to Princeton Regional School Board April 22

On March 19, in conjunction with the fifth anniversary of the Iraq War, 300 Princeton High School students staged a mid-day walkout to protest the continuation of the War. The walkout was organized by NJ Students for Peace, an affiliate of the Princeton-based Coalition for Peace Action.

Now, the students plan to advocate a change in the way the war is discussed in the school environment. The students will ask for Princeton High School to offer them opportunities to learn about current events. They want to be able to voice their perspectives in a safe learning environment. Current high school students need to have the opportunity to learn and discuss these issues, because it will affect their lives as well as the future of this country.

Students, parents, and members of the community will bring up requests regarding the changes they wish to see at 8:00 pm on Tuesday, April 22 to Princeton Regional School Board Meeting at John Witherspoon Middle School.

The students feel that the Iraq War is an issue that is extremely relevant to students lives today, and many don't know what is really happening -- just the information they see on television and mainstream media, which doesn't present a full scope of what is truly happening.

Two examples of the Students For Peace requests are:

1) That teachers should encourage their students to talk about their views on any issue, while acting as a moderator and encouraging expression of alternative views to foster open discussion and critical thinking on the topic

2) That there should be an elective on current events, where focused discussion can occur on current issues. This elective class would foster argument and debate skills, improve analytical skills, expand the range of students’ knowledge about current events, and expose students to varying positions on critical issues.
