Rally Against U.S. Occupation of Iraq
Saturday, June 26, Princeton, NJ

As the June 30 date for the “official” turnover of sovereignty to an interim Iraqi government on approaches, the Coalition is responding to a Call from Win Without War and United for Peace and Justice, the two largest national US peace coalitions, to Rally against continued US occupation of Iraq and calling for setting a date for withdrawal of US troops.

As June 30 approaches, the all-too-familiar refrain that there is “light at the end of the tunnel,” as was heard during the Vietnam War, is beginning to be voiced by Bush policy apologists. But as in Vietnam, the indefinite presence of US troops—projected by independent analysts as needing to last 5-10 years—is causing the situation to worsen rather than improve.

The number of US troops killed has surpassed 800 as this newsletter goes to press, and the number of Iraqi civilians killed is estimated at over 10,000. Tens of thousands more have been wounded and maimed. The Bush policy of unilateral, preemptive war and a badly bungled US occupation has led to this unnecessary suffering, and it is now time to hold them accountable and bring the carnage to an end.
