25th Anniversary Conference
and Interfaith Service for Peace
The Coalition for Peace Action’s very special 25th
Anniversary Conference and Interfaith Service for Peace
takes place on
Sunday, November 14.
Dr. Gwendolyn Zohorah Simmons, Professor of Religion at the
University of Florida, will be the preacher at the Interfaith
Service for Peace at 11 AM at Princeton University Chapel.
Dr.
Simmons, a Muslim, will be the first preacher for the
interfaith service not from the Judeo-Christian tradition.
She has a long
history in peace and justice, having worked in the civil
rights movement and then as a long-time staff member of
the American
Friends Service Committee. Leaders from a wide range of
faith communities will participate in the leadership of
the worship.
All are welcome to this without any registration fee; a
free-will offering to support the Coalition’s work
will be taken.
At 1:30 PM, the afternoon Conference on the topic “The
Impact of the Media on War and Peace” will begin
at Nassau Presbyterian Church, 61 Nassau Street, Princeton
(right across
from Palmer Square). Confirmed speakers include:
- Amy Goodman, WBAI Radio Host and
author of a just published book on the conference topic.
- Peter Hart, Activism Director of FAIR (Fairness and Accuracy
in Reporting), co-host of the radio show CounterSpin,
and author of a recent book.
- Laura Secor, the foreign policy correspondent for the
American Prospect and former staff reporter for the
Boston Globe, whose
work has appeared in the New York Times, The Atlantic
Monthly, Dissent, and The Nation.
The featured speaker Dr. Noam
Chomsky is a world
renowned MIT linguist who co-authored a seminal
work in the area
of the
conference title, Manufacturing Consent.

25th Anniversary Kick-Off Gala Dinner
- Saturday November 13
The Coalition for Peace
Action will kick off its 25th Anniversary Year with a very
special Gala on Saturday, November 13 at the Chauncey Center
of Educational Testing Service, Rosedale Road in Princeton.
The honorary co-chairs of this special event are Senators
Bill Bradley, Jon Corzine, Frank Lautenberg, and Representative
Rush Holt.
The Gala will include a
Reception with Silent Auction and Art Exhibition, followed
by a Dinner at which
Professor
Frank von Hippel, nuclear weapons expert and long-time
Coalition sponsor,will be presented with the inaugural
George F. Kennan Distinguished Peace Leadership Award.
Tickets are $250 each, which will benefit The Peace Endowment
of the Coalition’s educational arm, the Peace Action
Education Fund.
The Reception is scheduled from 5:00-6:30 PM. Besides hors
d’oeuvres and good conversation, it will feature
a Silent Auction to benefit the Peace Endowment. Also featured
will be an Art Exhibition from the collection of the Rutgers
University Center of Innovative Print and Paper, curated
by Professor Judith Brodsky, founding director, in the
Brodsky Gallery of the Center.
At 6:30 PM the Kick-Off Dinner begins in the Solomon Dining
Room. It will offer a choice of salmon, filet mignon, or
vegetarian cuisine. Dinner speakers will include the evening’s
honoree, Professor Frank von Hippel, and Dr. Bruce Blair,
President of the Center for Defense Information and former
nuclear weapons launch officer.

Benefit Concert
featuring David Brahinsky
on Friday, November 12
David Brahinsky is a singer-songwriter-storyteller
who has been singing for peace for over 35 years. He will
lead a benefit Concert to kick off the Coalition for Peace
Action’s 25th Anniversary weekend on Friday, November
12 at 8 PM at the Princeton Center for Yoga and Health located
in the Montgomery Professional Center, 50 Vreeland Drive,
Suite 206 in Skillman (take Route 518 west ½ mile
from intersection with Route 206).
Joining him for this Concert for Peace will be some young
friends, musicians and songwriters from the Big Apple who
will trek out to New Jersey just for this special evening.
They are 20-somethings Sarah Houtz and Joe Pepitone, who
are slowly but surely making their way to stardom in the
City. Sarah sings like an angel, Joe plays like a prince,
and 30-something Rick Cusick, who already has a regular gig
in Manhattan, will also join the celebration.
Tickets are $15 per person in advance (see coupon below,

Peace Fest NJ Students for
Peace
Friday, October 29, Princeton, NJ
New
Jersey Students for Peace (SFP), the student affiliate
of the Coalition for
Peace Action, re-activated this summer and is meeting weekly
in Princeton. To commence a new year of activism, they
are planning a “Peace Fest” from 6:30-10:00
PM on Friday, October 29 at the Unitarian Universalist
Congregation, 50 Cherry Hill Rd. in Princeton (just up
Cherry Hill from the intersection with Route 206).
A number of bands from area high schools will perform,
including 2 little girls from Princeton, Goosie from
Franklin, Golden Lotus from Franklin, and Retrospect
from South Brunswick.
In between musical sets, there will be small group discussions
led by members of SFP on the following topics:
1. Globalization
2. Counter-recruitment and the draft
3. Current wars
4. Elected Representatives and Peace
Snacks will also be available throughout the evening.
There is a $5 suggested donation at the door. For further
