25th
Interfaith Service and
Conference for Peace
This
year’s
Annual Conference and Interfaith Service for Peace,
which will mark the
end of our 25th Anniversary Year, is on Sunday,
November 13 at Princeton
University. The topic is the Morality
of War and alternatives for Peace.
We
are delighted to announce that Scott Ritter, former
UN Weapons Inspector
and Team Leader in Iraq, and leading expert critic
of the Bush Administration’s
preemptive war in Iraq, will be a speaker.
We
plan a critical in-depth look at the
morality of a government’s choice to
initiate war with a preemptive strike. We will
also examine peaceful alternatives,
such as inspections, as a means to prevent
the spread of weapons of mass destruction.
We
have some outstanding experts, in
addition to Scott Ritter, scheduled to speak
at this year’s
event. The Rev. Dr. Bob
Edgar, Secretary General of the National Council
of Churches, former member of Congress, and former
President of a major
seminary, will preach for the Interfaith Service.
Confirmed speakers for
the afternoon conference include
- Dr. Robert
Jay Lifton, renowned Harvard University psychiatrist
and prominent researcher and author on the
moral and psychological
effects of nuclear weapons.
- Wayne
Madsen, former National Security Agency staffer
and currently a Washington-based journalist
and author.
Between
now and June 30, you
are encouraged to take advantage of our
member-only early registration (see p. 3) to
guarantee your
seat at this special
event. After June 30, we will accept reservations
from the general public.

Building Friendships:
Report from the Ten-day Global
xchange and Code Pink Delegation to Iran
Thursday, June 23, 7:30 pm
Trinity Church, 33 Mercer St., Princeton
Anne Miller, Director of New Hampshire Peace
Action, returned in late April from a ten-day women’s
Building Friendships delegation to Iran.
The human rights organization Global Exchange and women’s
peace group
Code Pink organized the trip as an opportunity for cultural
sharing, relationship building, and information exchange between
American and Iranian women. |

Anne Miller
Director, New Hampshire
Peace Action
|
The trip was motivated by
the growing concern that the US may either take or sanction
military action against suspected nuclear facilities in Iran.
While in Iran, Anne and her colleagues met with a number
of diverse NGOs (non-government organizations) and with many
ordinary Iranians in the cities of Tehran, Yazd and Esfahan.
Anne has been the director of New Hampshire Peace
Action since June 2004. Prior to becoming director, Anne was
a member of the New Hampshire Peace Action Steering Committee
and a math teacher, as well as an activist. Come hear Anne
speak about her time in Iran, her interactions with the women
whom she met, and the necessity of a peace and justice movement
in America to prevent the spread of war from Iraq to Iran. |

Trenton Patriots Act Again
Against Expansion of USA Patriot Act
Trenton Peace
Action will hold a round-table discussion on the expansion
of the US Patriot Act at the Trenton Peace Center
on Monday, June 20, 7:30 p.m. at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral,
801 West State Street in Trenton. Panel participants include
Grayson Barber, Esq., American Civil Liberties Union; Lawrence
Kroah, Ph.D., Director of the Trenton Public Library; Manuel
Segura, Trenton City Councilman; Kip Cherry of the Mercer County
Coalition for Civil Liberties, and Kate Esposito of Trenton
Peace Action. New Jersey has a proud heritage of championing civil liberties.
Crucial battles against the tyrrany of British rule were fought
here in 1776 and New Jersey was the first state to sign and
ratify the Bill of Rights. Join us as we explore the erosion
of those hard-won liberties under the current Patriot Act.
The speakers will address the implications
for civil liberties should the act be expanded and/or the
more onerous provisions
made permanent. They will provide updates on the status of
legislative initiatives regarding the Patriot Act in Washington
and Trenton. The government’s right of intrusion into
library records/book purchases under the act will also be explored.
Refreshments following the program. The Trenton Peace Center,
a harbinger of truth, justice and inspiration for
the Trenton community, is a project of Trenton Peace Action.
